Before Sharpsburg
He was conscripted and enlisted there as a Private in Company I, 48th North Carolina Infantry on 16 August 1862.
On the Campaign
He was wounded and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and afterwards listed as missing.
The rest of the War
He was a prisoner at Fort Delaware until 2 October when he was sent to Aikens Landing, VA for exchange. He was officially exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was in a hospital in Richmond, VA by 8 October, transferred to a hospital in Danville, VA on 13 March 1863, and furloughed home on 27 May for 30 days. He was surrendered and paroled at Lynchburg, VA on 15 April 1865.
