Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 20 year old farm worker living with his parents and 4 younger siblings on their farm at Salem in Forsyth County, NC. He enlisted in Forsyth County on 22 March 1862 and mustered at Camp Mangum near Raleigh on 16 April as 4th Sergeant of Company K, 48th North Carolina Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was wounded by a gunshot to his left thigh in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
His leg was amputated the next day by Surgeon Lindsay and he was captured, probably on 19 September. He was admitted to US Army General Hospital #2 in the City Hotel in Frederick, MD on 15 October and sent on to Fort McHenry in Baltimore on the 17th. He was paroled there for exchange on 20 October, admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 23 October, formally exchanged on 10 November, and furloughed home to Salem, NC on 17 November 1862. He applied for a prosthetic leg in December 1864.
After the War
By 1870 and to at least 1880 he was a farmer at South Fork in Forsyth County, NC. In 1900 he was at Winston, NC and was a farmer there in 1910, living next door to his daughter Ellen (Harrison) and her family. In 1920 was retired and living with Ellen and family in what was by then Winston-Salem, NC.

He married Eugenia Anne "Jennie" Wagoner (1847-1917) in December 1866 and they had a daughter Ellen Terenta "Sallie" Burk (1871-1933) and son Robah (1882-1885).
