From Forsyth County, an unmarried 23 year old planter, he enlisted there as a Private in Company K, 48th North Carolina Infantry on 18 March 1862 along with his father William D (1814-1895) and brother Robert B Smith (1838-1907).

On the Campaign

He was reported missing in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862, but was probably killed there.

The rest of the War

The Company muster roll for December 1862, the last in his file, still has him "missing after battle of Sharpsburg."
