Before Sharpsburg
He led Company H, the "Zachry Rangers", of the 27th Georgia Infantry, and was elected Major of the Regiment 9 September 1861. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 24 December 1861.
On the Campaign
He assumed command of the Regiment after Colonel Smith was killed on 17 September, and was himself wounded in action at Sharpsburg.
The rest of the War
He was commissioned full Colonel after the battle (effective 17 September 1862), and led the Regiment for most of the remainder of the War. He was appointed Brigadier General in February 1865 (not confirmed?), and surrendered at Greensboro, NC on 26 April 1865 .
After the War
He was a 'prominent and leading planter' and served in the Georgia State Legislature.
