From Presque Isle, he enrolled at age 24 in Company A, 7th Maine Infantry as 2nd Lieutenant on 21 August 1861.

On the Campaign

He was reported missing (possibly captured) in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

Transferred to Company D, date not known. He was killed in action near Chancellorsville, VA while First Lieutenant in command of Company D leading an assault on Cemetery or St. Mary's Heights.
