Before Antietam
Son of Quaker missionaries, he was Principal of the China Academy, a Quaker school in his hometown at the start of the War. He raised a Company and was Captain as it became Company B of the 7th Maine Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was slightly wounded in action on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to Major of the Regiment in 1863, and again wounded, at the Wilderness, VA in 1864. He was killed in action 12 July 1864 at Fort Stevens, Washington, DC.
