Known by Merrill, he was about 22 and living in Bath when he enlisted as a Private in Company B, 7th Maine Infantry on 21 August 1861.

He was reported missing in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was discharged on 29 May 1863.

After the War

He was a truant officer in Garner, ME by 1892 and to at least 1894.
