Before Antietam

In 1860 he was a 19 year old farm worker on the Bates' place in Fairfield, ME. He enlisted on 5 August 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B, 7th Maine Infantry on 21 August 1861.

On the Campaign

He was slightly wounded in the arm in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was discharged on 19 November 1863 to transfer to Cowan's Battery - the First Independent Battery, New York Light Artillery. He reenlisted on 22 December 1863 and was mortally wounded at Cedar Creek, VA on 19 October 1864. He died of wounds on 22 November.
