Before Antietam

Age 20, from Union, he enlisted as a Private in Company B, 7th Maine Infantry on 23 September 1861.

On the Campaign

He was initially reported missing in action on 17 September 1862, but had been wounded by a gunshot to his left foot.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD on 27 September. A portion of his os calcis (heel bone) was removed, having necrosed, on 24 January 1863 and he was returned to duty on 9 June 1863. He reenlisted on 14 December and transferred to Company B of the First Maine Veteran Infantry on 21 August 1864. He was wounded again, at Winchester, VA on 19 September 1864 and was sent to Company H, 14th Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps on 10 December 1864.

After the War

He was given an invalid veteran's pension in 1885.
