Age 23, from Biddeford, he mustered as Corporal, Company F, 7th Maine Infantry on 21 August 1861. He transferred to Company D when "F" was disbanded, and was promoted to Sergeant, dates not given.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action while serving as Color Sergeant and carrying the flag at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
