Before Antietam

A 26 year old lumberman from Hartland, ME, he enlisted on 12 August 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company E, 7th Maine Infantry on 21 August 1861. He was promoted to Corporal, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot in the hand in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD on 29 September and sent on to Philadelphia on 1 October 1862. Soon afterward he was under arrest in Augusta, ME and court-martialed, charges not known, sentenced to be discharged from the service "without pay or allowances."

After the War

In 1870 he was working in a shoe shop in Hartland, ME and in 1890 he began receiving an invalid veteran's pension.
