Before Antietam
In 1860 he was a 21 year old farm worker in Bath, ME. On 13 August 1862, then in Skowhegan, he enlisted as a Private in Company F, 7th Maine Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was slightly wounded by a gunshot in the hand in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was admitted to a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD on 29 September and sent back to his Company on 10 November 1862. He was discharged on 13 March 1863.
After the War
By 1880 he was a real estate agent in Grand Rapids, MI. He was admitted to the Eastern Branch, National Home for Disabled Veteran Soldiers in Togus, ME on 9 November 1916 and died there from bladder cancer the next Spring.

He was single at the time of his death, but a notice in the Daily Kennebec Journal of 21 March 1917 mentions that a son, George M. Philbrick, of Blanchard, survived him.
