Before Antietam
In 1860 he was a 20 year old blacksmith in Portland, ME. He enlisted on 16 August 1861 and mustered as Corporal, Company G, 7th Maine Infantry on 21 August 1861. He was promoted to Sergeant, date not given.
On the Campaign
He was severely wounded in the face in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was transferred as 2nd Lieutenant to Company I, 30th Maine Infantry in June (or January) 1864. He mustered out on 20 August 1865 in Savannah, GA.
