Before Antietam

A 25 year old laborer from Portland, he enlisted as a Private in Company D, First Maine Infantry on 3 May 1861 and mustered out with them on 5 August. He enlisted again, as a Private in Company B, 7th Maine Infantry on 21 August 1861. He transferred to Company K, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was reported missing in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was later listed as a deserter, but had enlisted in Washington, DC for Regular Army service on 26 January 1863 as a Private in Company D, 16th United States Infantry. He was discharged on 10 September 1864 at Annapolis, MD at the expiration of his term of service. He enlisted yet again on 28 September 1864 as a Private in Company H of the 2nd Maine Cavalry. He mustered out with them on 6 December 1865 in Barancas, FL.
