Before Antietam
An unmarried 20 year old farmer at Presque Isle (or Hodgdon), ME, he enlisted on 10 August 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company I, 7th Maine Infantry on 21 August 1861.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the leg in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to Corporal, date not given. He reenlisted on 12 December 1863 and transferred to the First Maine Veteran Infantry on 20 September 1864. He was promoted to Sergeant and First Sergeant of his Company, and mustered out with them on 28 June 1865.
After the War
In 1870 he was a teacher living on his parents' farm in Crawford County, IA, but by 1880 was a drygoods merchant in Dow City, IA.

He married Adelaide Charlotte "Addie" Folsom (1841-1873) in March 1865 in Maine and they had 3 children. He married again, Marian A Morrill (1847-1937) in Crawford County in September 1874, and they had a daughter.
