Before Sharpsburg

From Monroe County, he was commissioned Captain, Company D, 31st Georgia Infantry on 14 October 1861. He was appointed Lieutenant Colonel on 13 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was in command of the 31st Georgia. They were engaged late on September 16th as skirmishers in the vicinity of the East Woods, and were also among the first units engaged before dawn on the 17th. They joined in the counterattack of Hood's Division as those troops swept through the Cornfield.

LCol Crowder was wounded, and relieved by the next senior officer, Major Lowe.

The rest of the War

He resigned his commission on 19 August 1863.
