Before Sharpsburg
He had been a carpenter and millwright in Dallas, NC before the War, and joined the 37th Regiment a 1st Lieutenant of Company H in September 1861. He was elected Captain on 1 April 1862.
On the Campaign
He was in command of the regiment at Sharpsburg as senior officer present.
The rest of the War
He was promoted Major, to date from 30 July 1862, and to Lieutenant Colonel on 29 May 1863. He was wounded and captured at Gettysburg on 3 July 1863. He was imprisoned at Johnson's Island, Ohio until February 1865.
After the War
He returned to Gaston County and was a carpenter and farmer and served one term in the North Carolina state legislature (1876-77).
