He appears in the 1860 Federal Census for Quitman County, GA as a 19 year old merchant. He enrolled 15 August 1861 and was Captain of Company F, 7th Battalion Georgia Infantry. That unit became Company F of the 61st Georgia Infantry.

On the Campaign

He probably commanded the 38th Georgia Infantry at Sharpsburg on 17 September after all their officers were down.

The rest of the War

He was elected Major on 1 March 1863, but killed in action at Gettysburg on 1 July 1863.
