Before Antietam

A farm laborer's son, in 1860 he was a 14 year old living with his parents in Salisbury, Herkimer County, NY. At 15 years old he enlisted on 5 November 1861 in Salisbury and mustered as a Private in Company D, 97th New York Infantry on 11 November.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Corporal in December 1863, reenlisted on 5 January 1864, and was promoted to Sergeant on 13 January 1864. He was appointed First Sergeant on 2 May 1865 and officially mustered out with his company on 18 July 1865 in Washington, DC, though he'd already been home with his parents in Salisbury at least a month by then.

After the War

In 1875 he was a laborer still living with his parents in Salisbury, NY, but by 1880 he had married, had his own place, and worked as a blacksmith there. In 1900 he was a carpenter in Salisbury but by 1910 he was a farm worker in Greene, Chenango County, NY. In 1920 he was a mechanic at Chenango in Broome County and had finally retired there by 1930.
