He enlisted at age 35 in Company C, 104th NY Infantry on 1 October 1861. Promoted Sergeant in August 1862.

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
Promoted to First Sergeant in March 1863, briefly reduced to Private, then appointed Quartermaster Sergeant of the Regiment on 2 November 1864. He was commissioned First Lieutenant, Company E on 11 June 1865 and mustered out with the Company on 17 July 1865 near Washington, DC.
