Before Sharpsburg

A 22 year old mechanic from Newton County, he enrolled at Covington, GA and mustered as First Lieutenant of Company H, 3rd Georgia Infantry on 25 April 1861 and he was elected Captain on 18 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He commanded Company H in Maryland. At Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862

Lieutenant Colonel Nisbet commanded the regiment in this never to be forgotten battle, and after leading his command into line, fell dangerously wounded in several places. He was left on the field of battle and fell into the hands of the enemy. Captain John F. Jones succeeded to the command of the regiment.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Major on 30 December 1862 to rank from 1 July 1862. While in command of his regiment at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863, he was wounded by a gunshot to his right arm resulting in amputation above the elbow. He was sent to Atlanta from a hospital in Richmond, VA on 31 May 1863, attended a session of the Georgia Legislature as an elected member in November and December, and was retired to the Invalid Corps on 4 August 1864.

After the War

In 1880 he was an office clerk in Atlanta, GA.
