Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted on 8 July 1861 as a Private in Company C, 13th Georgia Infantry but was discharged for disability at Savannah, GA on 11 February 1862. He enlisted again, as a Private in Company A, 53rd Georgia Infantry on 28 April 1862 at Griffin.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot to his hand in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in a hospital in Richmond, VA to 4 October 1862, then furloughed home for 30 days. He was killed by a gunshot to his head at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863.

His brother William Thomas Latta (1839-1914) was also in Company A, and lost his right leg to amputation after a thigh wound at Gettysburg.
