In 1860 he was a 20 year old mill hand on his mother's steam mill at Cuthbert in Randolph County, GA. He enlisted in Griffin, GA on 8 July 1861 as a Private in Company E, 13th Georgia Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

His mother Margaret E Humphrey filed for his final pay of $75.23 in August 1863.
