Before Sharpsburg

From Scottsville, VA he was commissioned Captain, Company K - the Fluvanna Guards - 44th Virginia Infantry on 11 June 1861 at Bledsoe's Church, VA.

On the Campaign

He commanded the regiment as senior man present, and was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was furloughed home and returned to duty in February 1863 and was promoted to Major on 16 June 1863. He was captured in action at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864 and held at Fort Delaware. He was transferred to Hilton Head, SC on 25 June 1864 and exchanged at Charleston on 3August. He was again on furlough, returning to duty on 7 October 1864. He was wounded in the foot in action at Cedar Creek, VA on 19 October 1864 and treated at a hospital in Charlottesville, VA in November. He was back with his regiment on 3 February 1865.
