In 1860 he was a 43 year old mechanic in Houston County, GA. He enlisted as a Private in Company I, 13th Georgia Infantry on 8 July 1861 in Griffin.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

He married Nancy Washington Stewart (1824-1908) in July 1842 and they had 6 children.

His oldest, son James Washington McDearmond was also in Company I at Sharpsburg.
