Before Antietam

Age 19, he enlisted in New York City to serve three years, and mustered in as Private, Company F, 9th New York Militia (83rd Infantry) on 17 September 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Corporal on 1 September 1863. He was wounded again, in action in the Wilderness, VA on 6 May 1864. He transferred to Company I, 97th New York Infantry on 7 June 1864, and to Company I, 94th Infantry on 10 August, but he never actually served in either unit, being absent, wounded to the muster out of his Company on 18 July 1865.
