Before Sharpsburg

From Rappahannock County, he enrolled and was commissioned Captain, Company D, 47th Virginia Infantry on 4 June 1861. He was appointed Lieutenant Colonel on 1 May 1862. He was wounded in the head at Seven Pines, VA in 1 June and again at Frasier's Farm, VA on 30 June.

On the Campaign

He commanded the regiment in Maryland.

The rest of the War

He was badly wounded in the arm on the Weldon Railroad near Petersburg, VA on 19 August 1864 and his arm was amputated. He was discharged for disability from his wounds on 19 December 1864.

After the War

He was Professor of Mathematics at VMI until 1890, spent "several years" in Galveston, TX, and then was in the feed business in Washington, DC until he retired about 1896.
