Age 21 years, he enlisted at New York City to serve three years and mustered in as Private, Company B, 7th New York State Militia (83rd Infantry) on 27 May 1861.

He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

He died of wounds on 19 September.
