Before Sharpsburg
In June 1861 he was Captain of the Sperryville Sharpshooters, a company which fought with the 7th Virginia Infantry at First Manassas in July, and which became Company K at the 49th Regiment's organization in August.1
On the Campaign
He assumed command of the Regiment after Colonel Smith took command of the Brigade. Gibson was wounded in action at Sharpsburg.
The rest of the War
He was also in command of the Regiment on the Gettysburg and the Wilderness campaigns.2

According to family genealogists, he was likely son of Johnathan Catlett GIBSON IV (making him "V") who was also Colonel: War of 1812 veteran.
