Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 24 year old mechanic at Monroe, Union County, NC living with his mother and 2 young siblings. He enlisted there as a Private in Company B, 5th North Carolina Infantry on 3 May 1861. The 5th regiment was re-designated as the 15th in November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was reported missing in action on 17 September 1862 but had probably been killed there.

The rest of the War

He was listed as missing since Sharpsburg and "supposed to be dead" by February 1863.
