Age 18, he enlisted as a Private in Company C, 15th North Carolina Infantry on 15 July 1862 in Raleigh.

On the Campaign

He was reported "missing on the march to MD" in September 1862.

The rest of the War

The December 1862 Company muster roll says he was "sent to hospital Sept 17, 1862." He was listed afterward as "absent, sick ... and not heard from since" to at least July 1863. He had died of phthisis (lung disease) at the Eastern District Hospital in Richmond, VA on 24 November 1862.
