Age 19, he enlisted as a Private in Company H, 15th North Carolina Infantry on 15 July 1862 in Raleigh.

On the Campaign

He was reported missing in action on 17 September 1862 but had probably been killed there.

The rest of the War

By December 1862 he was listed on muster rolls as "lost in battle at Sharpsburg Sept. 17 '62" and as absent without leave to September 1863, when he was dropped from the roll "supposed to be dead."
