Before Sharpsburg

Raised for at least part of his youth in Houston County, Georgia, he was appointed to West Point in 1842. After graduating, he began service with the 2nd US Infantry, including action in the Mexican War (1847), where he was cited for bravery. He resigned his US commission in 1861.

Reportedly died of heart disease.
