From McDonough, he was a lawyer in Columbus, GA before the War. He was elected First Lieutenant of Company D, 3rd Battalion Georgia State Troops on 18 November 1861, and mustered out in 1862. He was elected Captain, Company F, 53rd Georgia Infantry on 2 May 1862. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 4 June 1862.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded leading his Regiment, probably in the Cornfield, before the assault of McLaws division.
The rest of the War
He died September 23 from wounds received at the Battle, probably while a prisoner of the Federals.
