Before Sharpsburg
He enrolled as First Lieutenant of Company A, 92nd Virginia Militia on 25 March 1862 and was commissioned Captain, Company L, 55th Virginia Infantry on 22 May.
On the Campaign
He commanded the regiment as senior officer present in Maryland.
The rest of the War
He was captured while on leave near Fredericksburg, VA on 14 December 1862 and held at the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, DC until he was exchanged on 15 March 1863. He was promoted to Major on 26 June 1863 but was mortally wounded on the Weldon Railroad near Petersburg, VA on 19 August 1864 and died the same day.
