Before Sharpsburg
He enrolled in Company A of the 56th Virginia Infantry in July 1861 and was elected Captain of his Company in May 1862.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action on South Mountain on 14 September 1862 but remained with his unit and relieved Colonel Stuart, who was ill, in command of the regiment at Sharpsburg on 17 September.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to Major of the Regiment on 13 June 1864, and appointed Lieutenant Colonel on 7 December 1864. He was captured in action at Hatcher's Run, Virginia, on 31 March 1865 and imprisoned at the Old Capitol Prison in Washington DC and at Johnson's Island before being released on 15 July.
After the War
He was a farmer and built and was president of the Richmond and Mecklenburg Railroad.
