Age 24, he enlisted on 9 August 1861 in New York City for three years, and mustered as Corporal in Company B, 61st NY Infantry on 18 September. He was reduced to Private on 1 May 1862.

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was transferred to Company G, Second Battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps on 7 April 1863.
