Before Sharpsburg
He was from Mobile County, Alabama and was a member of the Daniel Boone Rifles, which became Company D of the Battalion. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, Provisional Confederate Army in August 1861 (to date from April 1861). At 2nd Manassas 29 August 1862 he became commander of the Battalion on the death of Captain Bush, then in command. In his after-action report there, Brigade commander Archer said "Among the officers whose gallantry I especially noticed in the action were Lieut. Charles M. Hooper, Fifth Alabama." He was appointed Captain, date not given.
On the Campaign
He and the battalion participated in the siege and reduction of Harpers Ferry, but remained there to guard Federal prisoners when the rest of the Brigade marched to Sharpsburg on 17 September.
