Before Antietam

In 1860 he was a 23 year old school teacher living with his parents and sister Jane, also a teacher, on the family farm in Vienna, Oneida County, NY. He enlisted as a Private on 20 September 1861 in Utica, NY and mustered as a Corporal in Company B, 57th New York Infantry on 2 October. He was promoted to Sergeant on 19 February 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
