Age 21, from South Haven on Long Island, he enlisted at Yaphank and mustered as Private, Company I, 57th New York Infantry on 14 August 1861. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
