He enlisted in Company G, 13th New Jersey Infantry on 12 August 1862 and mustered as Sergeant on 25 August.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam, where he was Color Sergeant.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to 2d Lieutenant, Company A on 10 May 1863. He resigned his commission on 24 January 1864.
