Sheriff of Troup County, Georgia, he was elected Captain of Company B, 60th Georgia after his enlistment on 17 July 1861.

On the Campaign

He commanded the regiment as senior officer present at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in command at Gettysburg, also, and was elected Major 17 August 1863. He was wounded at the Wilderness (May 1864), and later Colonel and in command of the combined 60th and 61st Georgia (Jan 1865) until the surrender at Appomattox.
