Before Sharpsburg
He enlisted on 22 April 1861 and mustered in Atlanta as 3rd Sergeant of Company A, 6th Georgia Infantry on 27 May. He was wounded at Seven Pines, VA on 31 May 1862 and elected 2nd Lieutenant on 30 July.
On the Campaign
He succeeded to command of the Regiment on 17 September at Sharpsburg after all of his senior officers had been killed or wounded.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to First Lieutenant to date from the battle at Sharpsburg. He was promoted to Captain of Company A in June 1863 after Captain Arnold was promoted out of the Company. On 1 July 1864 he was appointed Inspector General on the brigade staff of Brigadier General A.H. Colquitt, and the General recommended him for a staff commission as Major and Assistant Adjutant General of the brigade, but he was instead appointed Major of the 6th Georgia Infantry in January 1865. He was surrendered on 26 April and paroled at Greensboro, NC on 1 May 1865.
After the War
By 1870 he was a dry goods merchant living next door to his parents-in-law at Sparta in Hancock County, GA. In 1880 he was a bookkeeper living with his father-in-law and other in-laws at Columbus, GA. In 1900 he was a clerk in Columbus.
