Age 21, he enlisted in Hazleton on 12 June 1861 and mustered into service as a Sergeant in Company A, 28th Pennsylvania Infantry on 28 June in Philadelphia.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in the arm action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of his wounds at the Corps hospital in Harpers Ferry on 11 December 1862.
