Age 19, he enlisted in Mt. Pleasant, PA on 21 June 1861 and mustered into service as a Private in Company B, 28th Pennsylvania Infantry on 28 June in Philadelphia.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at a field hospital on the Line Farm near Sharpsburg but died there the next day.
