Age 38, he enrolled in Philadelphia on 13 June 1861 and mustered into service as First Lieutenant of Company C, 28th Pennsylvania Infantry on 3 July in Philadelphia. He was promoted to Captain on 1 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
