Before Antietam
From Solon, he enlisted as Corporal 18 May 1861 in Company A, 23rd Ohio Infantry. Captain McIlrath recommended him for a commission [in a new regiment] as 2nd Lieutenant in April 1862 - Colonel Hayes endorsing - but Bull was not appointed.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action on 17 September 1862.

Basic information from State of Ohio1. Local history says Corporal Bull was mortally wounded at Antietam and died afterward while a prisoner of war. His father was Lorenzo Solon Bull (1813 - 1894) - an early Ohio pioneer. His widow (m. 12 January 1862) Huldah J Dewey - a relative of Admiral George Dewey - married another Company A soldier, George Washington Jenkins in 1867.
