Before Antietam

Age 20, he enlisted on 18 May 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company A, 23rd Ohio Infantry on 11 June.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot to his scalp and skull in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to the Capitol Hospital in Washington, DC on 21 September and sent to the Ward Hospital in Newark, NJ on the 25th. He returned to duty on 26 March 1863, but was back in a hospital, in Gallipolis, OH on 25 July reporting epileptic convulsions on sustained exertion. He transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps on 30 October 1863.
