Age 19 years, he enlisted 22 May 1861 at Champlain to serve two years and mustered in as Private, Company D, 34th New York Infantry on 15 June.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the left shoulder and right wrist in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

He was treated at the Hoffman Farm Hospital at Sharpsburg, MD, then at hospitals in Frederick, MD and Philadelphia, PA. He mustered out with his Company on 30 June 1863 at Albany, NY, and had subsequent service in Company C, Eighteenth New York Cavalry.
