Before Sharpsburg

After graduating from VMI and serving briefly as an instructor, he founded and was President of the Chuckatuck Military Academy (1854) [history]. At the start of the War, he helped organize and was elected Captain of the Chuckatuck Light Artillery in May 1861; they became Company F, 9th Virginia Infantry and he mustered as their Captain on 18 May 1861. He "saved the Regiment's flag at Malvern Hill" on 1 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He commanded his Company and the regiment for at least some part of the Maryland Campaign.

The rest of the War

He was wounded in action in Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg. He was commissioned Colonel of the Regiment on 4 July 1864 and was captured at Sayler's Creek, VA on 6 April 1865, briefly in Washington, DC, then held at Johnson's Island, OH. He was released on 25 July 1865 after taking an oath of allegiance.

After the War

He was in business in Norfolk to about 1890, when he moved to New York and was President of New York Board of Trade. He died of stomach cancer.
